Sustainable Shipping

Under the Auspices of H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos

27th Annual Conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME)

An IAME2019 Special Session on

Sustainable Shipping

Session organizers:

Harilaos N. Psaraftis – Technical University of Denmark, Denmark
Thalis Zis – Technical University of Denmark, Denmark

One of most important recent events that may impact international shipping in the years ahead has been the April 2018 decision of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) at the 72nd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 72) to adopt an Initial Strategy to reduce maritime green house gas (GHG) emissions (IMO, 2018). Among other things, a reduction of at least 50% in GHG emissions by 2050 (vis-à-vis 2008 levels) is foreseen. International shipping will be impacted in various ways, including, among others, ship technology, marine fuels, logistics, environmental performance and obviously economics. The basic question is, what does international shipping have to do to become more sustainable in the years ahead.

This session will present recent research results in this area. Contributions are sought on the following topics (list is only indicative):

  • Ship emissions
  • Fuel consumption optimization
  • Speed optimization
  • Alternative fuels
  • Sustainability in various shipping markets (tramp and liner)
  • Balancing environmental and economic performance
  • Weather routing
  • Achieving the 2050 GHG reduction target
  • Green ports
