The Laboratory for Economic Policy Studies (LEPS) of the Department of Economics at the Athens University of Economics and Business, together with the Hellenic Studies Program of the Yale MacMillan Center, Yale University (USA), invite you to a series of public lectures aimed at enhancing accessibility to scientific knowledge, promoting scientific culture in Greece, and contributing to public dialogue.
We invite you to the lecture titled “Shipping and Global Trade: New Perspectives on the Role of Transport Networks and Industrial Policy.”
Professor of Economics at Harvard University, Myrto Kalouptsidi, presents an innovative approach to linking shipping with global trade. Using modern analytical methods, the global shipping network is mapped and a novel framework for connecting maritime transport with global trade is introduced. Specifically, the lecture quantifies the cost of global disruptions, evaluates investments in port infrastructure, and outlines a roadmap for industrial policy aimed at sustainable prosperity.

Speaker’s Short Biography

Myrto Kalouptsidi is a Professor of Economics at Harvard University and the Radcliffe Institute. She earned her PhD in Economics from Yale University in 2011 and was an Assistant Professor at Princeton University from 2011 to 2016. Her research focuses on Industrial Organization and International Trade, particularly in transportation markets, examining the effects of industrial policy, global production distribution, and firms’ investment decisions in volatile markets.
She has received the Bodossaki Prize for distinguished young Greek scientists, and in 2022 her paper “Geography, Transportation, and Endogenous Trade Costs” (with Giulia Brancaccio and Theodore Papageorgiou) was awarded the Frisch Medal by the Econometric Society. She is also a Research Fellow at NBER and CEPR, with publications in leading journals including American Economic Review, Econometrica, Quarterly Journal of Economics, and Review of Economic Studies.
