Prof. Phoebe Koundouri, Chair of the (SDSN) Global Climate Hub and Professor of Economics at the Athens University of Economics and Business, will be speaking at the session “Smart Tech, Fair Finance – The Promise and Risks of AI for Sustainable Development”, organized by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The event will take place during the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) in Seville, Spain, on July 2, 2025, at 3:30 PM EEST. The session will also be accessible online.
As digital technologies and artificial intelligence increasingly shape global economic and social systems, this session will examine the urgent need for responsible AI governance and inclusive digital standards. The discussion will focus on strategic investments in digital infrastructure, the ethical deployment of AI, the integration of climate-smart technologies, and the significant risks of digital exclusion and unintended societal harms stemming from poorly governed digital systems.

30-06-2025AE4RIA – Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aephoria, in collaboration with the SDSN Global Climate Hub and the PVBLIC Foundation, is co-organising a high-level panel at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4), taking place in Seville.
Panel Title: Evidence-based Financial Pathways for Decarbonisation and Climate Neutrality
Date: Tuesday, 1 July 2025
Time: 16:30–18:00 CEST
Location: Room Side Event 23, FIBES Conference Centre, Seville -
26-06-2025The latest report from the SDSN Global Climate Hub, titled “Climate Neutrality Pathways for Greece: Integrated Assessment and Decision Support Tool (2025),” presents an integrated modelling approach to assess Greek National Commitments for Climate Neutrality, within a holistic framework that includes food-land, water, and cross-sectoral energy systems. This is achieved by combing different models (FABLE Calculator, BiofuelGCH tool, LEAP, Maritime GCH model, WaterReqGCH tool, LandReqCalcGCH tool) under a scenario of joint implementation of the most important sectoral policies driving the transition to climate-neutrality. In particular, different energy, agricultural, shipping, and water policy frameworks are simulated jointly in such a National-Commitment scenario, to provide useful insights on whether these plans can achieve the climate-neutrality goals and identify weaknesses that need to be addressed in order to capitalise on the opportunities for a broader sustainability transition.

25-06-2025Progress toward the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), set in 2015, is faltering—only 17% of targets are on track, with many stalled or regressing. A key barrier is systemic fragmentation, where siloed policies, competing priorities, and uncoordinated efforts hinder effective progress. This disjointed approach leads to inefficiencies, conflicting outcomes, and missed opportunities for synergy.
The cost of inaction is steep: the World Bank estimates $2.4 trillion annually is needed just to address global crises in developing nations, while the UN projects $5–7 trillion per year to meet the SDGs globally. Regulatory complexity further complicates international collaboration.

19-06-2025We are thrilled to announce a major achievement in our Erasmus BuildSkills Academy project — the official launch of the BuildSkills Platform (BSP)!
The BSP was fully designed and developed by our team at Athens University of Economics and Business — Eleni Toli, Panagiota Koltsida, Ebun Akinsete (PhD), and Stavroula Samara (BSc, M.A.) — under the leadership of Principal Investigator (PI) Prof. Dr. Phoebe Koundouri.
This free, user-friendly platform supports Vocational Education and Training (VET) providers across Europe in adapting their curricula to the green and digital transition in the construction sector. -

29-05-2025Prof. Phoebe Koundouri is honored to be featured in the National Herald of New York (Ethnikos Kirikas & The National Herald Inc.), discussing the global environmental stakes of the ongoing U.S.–China rivalry — the world’s two largest polluters.
In the interview, Prof. Koundouri explores how the policy choices of these two nations shape the future of our planet, emphasizing the importance of science-based decision-making, regenerative economic models, and green innovation. She also highlights the work being carried out at AE4RIA – the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aephoria – and the UN SDSN Global Climate Hub in supporting ambitious, data-driven climate policy.
