On Wednesday, July 3, took place the Policy Session 13 “Building an Inclusive Future: Strategies for Equity and Social Change for Sustainable Society” at EAERE2024 (Leuven, Belgium) organized by the Executive Committee of the EAERE Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative DEI.

From June 28 to 30, 2000 participants from across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the United States The Climate Reality Project took part in “The Climate Reality Project” in Rome, alongside former US Vice President Al Gore and esteemed scientists!

On Thursday, June 13th, AE4RIA had the privilege of hosting an impactful workshop at the Athens University of Economics and Business on the crucial topic of “Ensuring the Resilience of Greece’s Tourism and Digital Sectors”. The event was part of the initiative “Partnerships for Regional Innovation” and is implemented with the cooperation of AUEB, EIT Climate-KIC (Europe’s largest climate innovation initiative and community), and the EU Science Hub – Joint Research Centre. The initiative aims to develop regional innovation agendas in the process of climate-proofing Smart Specialization Strategy.

The BuildSkills Academy General Coordination Meeting took place in Athens, Greece, on June 6-7, 2024. The meeting was hosted at the Athens University of Economics and Business.

The latest quarterly meeting of the ERC-funded “Water-Futures” project took place from May 16-17, 2024, at the Athens University of Economics and Business. The project team convened to discuss innovative strategies for advancing water infrastructure systems.

From Tuesday, April 23rd, until Wednesday, April 24^th, 2024, the 1st DOORS Stakeholder Conference on ‘Black Sea Futures: Science, Prosperity, and People’ took place in Bucharest, Romania. The aim of this conference was to engage stakeholders in the DOORS project co-design process, keep track of their evolving needs, and co-develop the lasting impact and legacy of DOORS. It included high-level sessions and interactive workshops.

On Friday, 26^th of April 2024, an event on “Transition to Circular Economy: The Role of Education & Entrepreneurship” will take place at Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) at Troias Amphitheater (2 Troias, Kimolou and Spetson street, 11362, Athens) from 12 pm until 3pm. The multiplier event is under the Erasmus+ project, TICHE Academy.

On Wednesday 13^th of December 2023, Creative Thinking Development, Athens University of Economics and Business and Sporos Circular Solutions, organized a CATALYST a National Event with the title: “National Centre of Vocational Excellence: A central hub and catalyst for sustainable business transformation in Greece”, that was held in Airotel Alexandros, Athens, Greece.

On Monday, 27^th of September 2023, Ms. Lydia Papadaki (Researcher, AUEB) presented virtually the results of the Report “A skills gaps and needs assessment for the sustainability transformation” that was developed under the CATALYST Erasmus+ project at the 3^rd World Conference on ENVIRONMENTAL AND EARTH SCIENCES in London, UK, one of the leading conferences in the fields of Environmental and Earth Sciences.

From the 11th until the 13th of September 2023, a workshop of the ERASMUS+ CATALYST project took place in the premises of BEST in Vienna, Austria. AUEB was represented by Ms Lydia Papadaki (Researcher, PhDc at AUEB) and Ms Eleni Toli (Senior researcher at AUEB).

From the 30th of May until the 1st of June 2023, the second project meeting of the ERASMUS+ CATALYST project took place in the premises of ISCTE in Lisbon, Portugal.

From March 7 – 9, 2023, the 6th International Conference on Education for Human Security took place online. The conference examined the relevance and applicability of the human security approach to different fields of higher education. It sought to generate awareness and initiate active discussion among educators and universities on the central importance of the Human Security Approach as an integral component of higher education.

On Wednesday, February 22, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri gave a speech at the online event entitled “REPowerEU: From crisis to solution” which was co-organized by the EUROPE DIRECT Epirus, Peloponnese, Region of Western Greece and Region of Thessaly.

On Friday 17th February, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri  gave a speech at the panel “Towards a Circular EU Agrifood System” at the 11th Congress of Agroteology entitled: “Contemporary Agri-Food Systems in the Circular Economy: Unlocking the future”, which took place at the Porto Palace Hotel in Thessaloniki it was organized the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce with the Agrotechnology Committee.

On the 31^st of January, Prof. Koundouri gave a speech about the (ERC) Water Futures project and its potential contribution to support European policies on water scarcity and adopt a nexus approach in the discussion with the topic: Water Scarcity and the nexus in European policy which was introduced by Dagmar Kaljarikova Behrendt (European Commission, DG ENV) and moderated by Prof. Chrysi Laspidou at the Webinar: ‘Nexus research for improved policy support: water scarcity in Europe’.

The first roundtable in Greece on “New Skills, Education and Strategies for Sustainable Development in a Circular Economy: Challenges and Prospects in Greece” was successfully held on December 2,  2022, at the Hypatia Mansion, in Athens, co-organized by Sporos Circular Solutions, the Athens University of Economics and Business, and CreThiDev,  in the framework of the international project CATALYST “Challenges and Prospects in the Operation of Sustainable Systems and Business Transformation”.

The First Dolomite Conference on the Global Governance of Climate Change: On the road to Sharm El-Sheikh

From the 20th – 22nd October in a three-day meeting thirty visionary intellectuals, policy makers, entrepreneurs, managers, journalists, political and natural scientists met to discuss the matter of climate change and find innovative solutions. The whole conference has been articulated by problems to be solved into working groups and plenary discussions, whose conclusions were then reported by the chairs and introducers of various sessions.

On Thursday, October 20, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri gave the keynote speech at the 10th edition of STRATEGICA International Conference: Sustainable Development and Strategic Growth. Her speech focused on “Accelerating SDG-based Sustainability Transition”.

On 26th September prof. Phoebe Koundouri gave a keynote speech focused on “European Sustainability Transition: Policy and Vision” at the 20th annual Corporate Responsibility Conference, Headwinds 

On the occasion of the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations, Prof. Koundouri gave five different speeches in New York. These speeches were focused on the presentation of the SDSN Global Climate Hub that she chairs, as well as the SDSN and AE4RIA research on the acceleration of SDGs Implementation.

The hybrid Greece-Japan Sustainable Island Symposium is co-organised by the  Research Laboratory on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability (ReSEES) at Athens University of Economics and Business, the Institute for Future Initiatives (IFI) at the University of Tokyo and the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria (AE4RIA). It will take place from 28^th to 29^th of September at the Electra Palace in Athens, Greece followed by a hybrid Climathon on Sustainable islands which will run from 28^th to 30^th of September inviting everyone to suggest solutions on “Sustainability and ageing population”.

Greek sustainability leaders, selected by Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium: Prof. Phoebe Koundouri had the honor of being selected by Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium, as one of the 7  Greek sustainability leaders.

On May 3rd the SDSN’s Senior Working Group on European Green Deal  will launch the 2ndAnnual Report, entitled “Financing the Transformations for the Joint Implementation of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the European Green Deal” 

The official launch of the Goulandris Natural History Museum exhibition on climate change took place on Friday 16 April. This is the first interactive exhibition on Climate Change in Greece and is entitled “Climate Change and Us”.

On the 31st of March & 1st of April the second meeting of the European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant “Water Futures” took place at at ATHENA Research and Innovation Center.

On 17th March Prof. Phoebe Koundouri participated as a Keynote Speaker at the conference “New Trends in Football: CSR and Sustainable Development” organized by BOUSSIAS and supported by SDSN Europe & SDSN Greece. The conference presented the New Trends in modern football in the light of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development.

At the end of October 2021, the first edition of the 5^th G-STIC Conference took place during World Expo in Dubai. The World Expo is focused on knowledge and technologies that are crucial to achieving the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It was therefore the perfect setting for holding the fifth G-STIC Conference, the first one to take place outside of Brussels (Belgium).

Among the speakers were the co-chairs of SDSN Greece, Prof. Andreas Papandreou and Prof. Phoebe Koundouri as well as the Deputy Manager of SDSN Greece, Antonios Alevizos.

The Cluster for Sustainability Transition ( ReSEES at AUEB, ΕΙΤ Climate- KIC Hub Greece & SDU at “Athena” RC and SDSN Greece) will participate at the 9^th Annual ICSD  in several sessions.

Prof. Koundouri participated in the Second session, a panel of experts discussed in a round table the very important topic of “Recording and Reporting of the SDGs” which was moderated by Prof. N. Theodossiou and Professor G. Zarotiadis.

On the 28^th of July Prof. Koundouri participated in a discussion on “Economists for Future: research frontiers in climate change economics” together with Prof Peter Victor and Dr. Sharachchandra Lele at Rethinking Economics Digital Festival 2021.

On the 21st of July Prof. Koundouri co-chaired the session “Raising the Impact of Agricultural Economics in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Research and Policy” at the 16th Congress of the European Association of Agricultural Economists, EAAE.

On 7/7/21 Prof. Koundouri gave a speech at the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) Special Event "Driving collective action for the SDGs: The role of further education.

This thematic session is dedicated to the “EAERE Award for ERC Grants laureates in the field of environmental and resource economics”. This award intends to recognize the scientific excellence of ERC grantees (Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants, Advanced Grants, Synergy Grants) in the field of environmental and resource economics.

This thematic session is dedicated to the EAERE Award for Best Doctoral Dissertations in Environmental and Resource Economics. This award is given to encourage and recognize outstanding and innovative academic achievement in the field of Environmental and Resource Economics. Three dissertations are awarded every year after peer review of all submissions.

PANEL II – YOUTH PARTICIPATION FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE

After the success of the first Athens Circular Forum in bringing the Circular Agenda at the heart of the public debate, this year the Athens Circular Forum II took place on May 31 and June 1, as the Partner Event for Greece in the #EUGreenWeek, under the auspices of the EU Commission and the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy.

On 26/5/21 Professor Phoebe Koundouri gave a lecture to the Friends of the Goulandris Museum of Natural History on the topic: "Climate Crisis and Individual Responsibility".

On 17/11 Prof. Koundouri participated in the discussion on Science and Social Consensus in the Mediterranean at CASSANDRA 2021 Conference organized by Eurecat.

We are pleased to share with you the upcoming workshop of the Nexus Project Cluster, which is going to be held on Tuesday November 23. The title of the Workshop is 'Advancing the Nexus for Science and Policy'. During the workshop Several new projects funded from H2020 and PRIMA will present themselves and there will be a more forward-looking approach to identify emerging topics for research and policy. The workshop will of course also focus on how the cluster could support science and policy in the next years.

The transition to net zero emissions by 2050 could hinder environmental and biodiversity conservation. EAERE promotes the research-policy interface by examining this issue from an energy, marine and land-use standpoint. This provides the science-based framework to analyse the key role that renewable assets, reporting standards and sustainable finance can play to drive a sustainable transition.

On 23/1 Prof. Koundouri gave a speech at the conference "Innovation in Greece and the bodies that support it" organized by the National Bank of Greece,  Athens Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation | AUEB,  Archimedes - Center for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship of NKUA,  Uni.Fund,  Bayer Hellas AG and Endeavor Greece.

On 18/1 at 10:30-11:30 (EET) Prof. Koundouri chaired the discussion between the EU Commissioner, Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, and the Minister of Digital Governance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis at the “EUandU, online edition” conference.

This is why in 2020 EIT Climate-KIC, EIT Food, EIT Manufacturing, EIT Raw Materials, ATHENA and BioAzul have joined forces to face the real challenges around this theme and collaborate in the cross-KICs project “Finding innovative solutions for water scarcity in Southern Europe”. Representatives of the KICs and Slow Food  will engage in a discussion to share knowledge on environmental protection and sustainability related to water management, and raise awareness about water scarcity and climate change on a national and international scale.

On Friday, April 12, 2019, a conference on

"Offshore floating wind energy in Greece: new opportunities, challenges and prospects" was held at Hilton hotel organized by Norwegian embassy. The panel was composed by stakeholders from all different sectors, Jorn Eugene Gjelstad, Ambassador of Norway in Greece, Michalis Veriopoulos (Ministry of Environment and Energy of Greece), Dr. Dionisios Papachristou (Regulatory Authority for Energy), Ladakakos Panagiotis (Hellenic Wind Energy Association), Prof. Angelos Syrigos (Panteion University), International lawyer and Arne Eik (New Energy Solutions).

In the context of the ENTROPY project, the ELTRUN E-Business Research Center of Athens University of Economics and Business alongside with the participation of ten H2020 project, organized the H2020 International Workshop entitled “The next day for Energy Efficiency” , which was held in Athens, Greece on Wednesday, November 7th, 2018.

Following the adoption of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals within the context of Agenda 2030, governments and the private sector are working on stablishing ways and practices that will allow efficient and effective implementation of the Goals.

On the way to achieving sustainability by 2030, technological developments, innovative practices and materials, sustainable investment and new partnerships are being pursued, with the hope to lead humanity to this new era of development and welfare. On the other hand, conceptual challenges, weak governance structures and institutions, limited transparency and financing restrictions are only some of the shortcomings that hinder progress toward this end.
