On 14 November, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri spoke at a special event hosted by the Hellenic Army Academy, where the discussions centred on the strategic importance of water, the need for resilience planning, and the challenges facing critical infrastructure in the context of a rapidly changing climate.

In her intervention, Prof. Koundouri focused on the Economics of Water, highlighting the investment requirements for the coming decade and the importance of aligning national priorities with the EU’s emerging Water Resilience Strategy. She emphasized that water is not merely a natural resource but a strategic asset—fundamental to economic stability, climate adaptation, and national security.

She also presented the extensive work undertaken at AE4RIA – Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aephoria, through research and innovation projects that design systemic tools, digital platforms, and policy pathways to strengthen water governance, enhance climate resilience, and support sustainable blue–green transitions. Furthermore, she introduced the European Research Council (ERC) Water-Futures Project, a €10 million initiative developing the next generation of urban drinking water systems. Through this project, her team develops advanced modelling, foresight, and governance tools that enable cities to navigate deep uncertainty and reinforce the resilience of critical water infrastructures, ensuring secure, sustainable, and adaptive urban water services.

As a member of the Scientific and Conservation Council of Tour du Valat, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri was pleased to participate in the Council’s Annual Meeting. The gathering offered a valuable opportunity for her to engage with esteemed colleagues and contribute to the scientific and conservation strategy of this leading research institute.

Tour du Valat is a renowned research centre dedicated to the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands. Guided by the principle “Better understand wetlands to better manage them,” the institution integrates ecological research, applied management, and policy engagement to safeguard these unique and increasingly threatened ecosystems.

Prof. Koundouri continues to contribute actively to Tour du Valat’s mission and its ongoing efforts to strengthen Mediterranean biodiversity and resilience.

As COP30 unfolds in Belém, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri will participate in a high-level session, part of the UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub (UGIH) COP30 Dialogues, highlighting how artificial intelligence and digital public goods can accelerate fair, inclusive, and accountable progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. On 10/11, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri attended a highly productive meeting at the Institut français de Grèce (IFG) with the renowned French oceanographer Dr. Françoise Gaill, together with Dr. Matthieu Abgrall, Scientific and University Cooperation Attaché & Deputy Director of the French Institute of Greece, and her colleague Prof. Serafeim Poulos, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

They engaged in an in-depth discussion on the sustainability of our oceans, the interconnections between ocean health, climate action, and the blue economy, and explored new opportunities for collaboration between Greek and French scientific and academic institutions. The meeting also covered joint initiatives that link scientific evidence with policy design to advance a sustainable and climate-resilient future for the oceans.

As Co-Chair of the United Nations Independent Group of Scientists (IGS) for the 2027 Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR), Professor Phoebe Koundouri led the recent mission to Incheon, Republic of Korea, for the Asia-Pacific Regional Consultation, held on 5–6 November 2025: https://sdgs.un.org/gsdr2027#regional_consultation.

Organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Division for Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Office for Sustainable Development) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), the consultation convened scientists, policymakers, civil society representatives, and private-sector experts from across the region. Participants engaged in in-depth exchanges on strategies to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to strengthen the science–policy–society interface.

In her capacity as Co-Chair of the IGS, Professor Koundouri delivered the opening and closing remarks, led reflections on regional outcomes, and contributed to dialogues on the following thematic areas:

• Ten years of SDG implementation in Asia-Pacific — successes, challenges, and lessons learned;

• Bridging insights from the 2023 and 2027 GSDRs to advance systems-based transformations;

• Strengthening science–policy–society interfaces for inclusive and just transitions;

• Building resilience and managing uncertainty to promote sustainable development beyond 2030; and

• Harnessing science, data, and innovation for evidence-based policymaking.

The consultation highlighted the indispensable role of science and multilateral collaboration in accelerating progress toward the SDGs. The insights and knowledge gathered in Incheon will directly inform the 2027 Global Sustainable Development Report, shaping evidence-based recommendations for the international community as it advances toward 2030 and beyond.

Prior to the consultation, on 4 November 2025, the IGS held its working meeting, co-chaired by Professor Phoebe Koundouri and Dr. Adedoyin Adeleke, PhD, alongside colleagues from UN DESA. During this session, the group advanced the development of the report’s conceptual framework, agreed on key components to be included in the 2027 GSDR, and outlined strategies for outreach and regional engagement in the coming year.

UN DESA, UNOSD, UN ESCAP, and regional experts played a central role in contributing to this collective effort.

The recordings from the 5th ERC Starting Grant Mentoring Event, co-organised by the Young Academy of Europe (YAE) and the Academia Europaea Budapest Hub, are now available.

As an ERC grantee and Ambassador for the ERC, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri contributed to this initiative, which supports early-career researchers in navigating the ERC process and advancing frontier research across Europe. The Ambassadors for the ERC network, launched by the ERC and the Association of ERC Grantees (AERG), unites ERC grantees to advocate for frontier research and to illustrate how scientific discovery drives economic growth and societal progress.

On 21 October, our team had the pleasure of welcoming Professor Jeff Schlegelmilch from Columbia University’s Climate School, Director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP) and of Executive Education and Non-Degree Programs, at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), ReSEES Research Laboratory.

Following an introduction by Professor Dr. Phoebe Koundouri, we presented our work on systems innovation, stakeholder co-design, accelerators, education, research initiatives, and the activities of the SDSN Global Climate Hub.

The meeting was an inspiring exchange of ideas, and we look forward to fostering meaningful collaborations that advance climate resilience, innovation, and sustainability.

A truly inspiring fireside chat took place during the 3rd Hellenic Impact Investing Conference with Dr. Richard Damania, Chief Economist at The World Bank.

The discussion centered on the World Bank’s recent report, Reboot Development: The Economics of a Livable Planet, hosted by the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford, on September 2nd, in which Prof. Phoebe Koundouri proudly participated.

The report highlights that degraded natural wealth poses both environmental and economic challenges—and that sustainable growth, job creation, and global prosperity can be achieved through integrated policies across land, air, and water sectors.

The conversation focused on how economic policy can safeguard natural capital, de-risk climate action, and align public and private finance to deliver a livable, climate-resilient, and inclusive future, with actionable pathways tailored to Europe and Greece.

AE4RIA – Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria – was proud to be a partner and supporter of the 3rd Hellenic Impact Investing Conference, held on 13–14 October 2025 at Zappeion Megaro, Athens, a leading event promoting sustainability and impact investing in Greece and Southeast Europe.

Dr. Konstantinos Dellis, under the leadership of Prof. Phoebe Koundouri, contributed to the TSI–TAIEX Workshop, supporting the implementation of Cyprus’s revised National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan—“Enhancing disaster risk management and climate change adaptation in Cyprus”—with a session titled “Financing Adaptation Pathways: Insights from the Pathways2Resilience (P2R) Project.”

His presentation highlighted how the Adaptation Investment Cycle (AIC), developed within Pathways2Resilience, addresses common barriers to adaptation finance—from fragmented data and unclear policy signals to low perceived returns—while promoting just resilience. The AIC is a flexible, iterative process with multiple entry points for regions, whether they follow existing adaptation plans or co-shape new regional action plans.

A key policy recommendation from this work is the integration of investment planning within the updated EU guidance for national and regional adaptation plans, which is an essential step to strengthen the financial dimension of resilience building.

During the interactive workshop, participants from diverse regional and national contexts exchanged experiences and insights with great enthusiasm. Key barriers identified by the group included:

• Low prioritization of adaptation by policymakers

• Fragmented data on adaptation needs and opportunities

• Limited fiscal autonomy for many European regions and cities

Proposed solutions included:

• Green tagging in regional budgets

• Adoption of green taxes to fund adaptation

• Embedding resilience narratives in early education

These exchanges reaffirmed the value of collaborative learning and innovation in unlocking adaptation finance and accelerating climate resilience across Europe.

At the 22nd Annual Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS Forum 2025), held from October 5–7, 2025, in Kyoto, Japan, more than 1,500 global leaders from over 80 countries, regions, and international organizations convened to explore how science and technology can provide solutions to today’s most pressing global challenges.

Since its establishment in 2004, the STS Forum has evolved into a prestigious global platform that brings together Nobel Laureates, distinguished academics, government officials, and industry leaders, each contributing unique insights to international discussions on the role of science and technology in advancing human well-being.

This year’s Forum was graced by the presence of Their Majesties, the Emperor and Empress of Japan, and Shigeru Ishiba, Prime Minister of Japan, and was opened by Hiroshi Komiyama, Chairman of the STS Forum.

During the session on “AI in Society: Social Networks and Communication,” Professor Phoebe Koundouri contributed to the discussion by emphasizing the necessity of effective AI regulation by governments and international organizations. Such regulation, she noted, is essential not only to stimulate and accelerate AI innovation but also to ensure safety, fairness, and accountability. Professor Koundouri proposed three key transformations:

1. Restructuring social networks into knowledge networks that can effectively support a knowledge-based economy.

2. Establishing a broad Open Access Review process to enhance transparency and collaboration.

3. Building the capacity of a knowledge-based economy through education, skills development, practical application, and shared values.

The discussion examined both the “lights and shadows” of AI—its dual impacts on communication, truth, and democracy. Participants addressed challenges such as misinformation, the erosion of critical thinking, and governance gaps, while exploring potential solutions including international AI standards, AI literacy education, and open, transparent digital systems.

Prof. Phoebe Koundouri participated in the 2025 Thessaloniki Sustainability Summit, organized under the theme “10 Years of the Paris Agreement” by SDSN Black Sea, with the support of the Department of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), and the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS).

During the WAAS Fellows Plenary Panel on “The Role of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS) in the Implementation of the Paris Agreement)”, moderated by Prof. Nikos Theodosiou, Chair of SDSN Black Sea, Prof. Koundouri presented an overview of the progress achieved toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) over the past decade. Her remarks drew upon findings from the interdisciplinary research conducted at the SDSN Global Climate Hub, contributing to a series of reports evaluating national and regional pathways toward climate neutrality (https://unsdsn.globalclimatehub.org/un-sdsn-global-climate-hub-report-modelling-net-zero-pathways), as well as from SDSN Europe’s Europe Sustainable Development Reports (https://eu-dashboards.sdgindex.org/).

In addition, Prof. Koundouri referred to her role as Co-Chair of the Independent Group of Scientists responsible for drafting the 2027 Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR). The GSDR, published every four years, is a flagship United Nations science-policy report that strengthens the interface between science, policy, and society. As the final edition before the 2030 deadline of the UN Agenda 2030, it will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the global sustainable development agenda (https://sdgs.un.org/gsdr2027).

Prof. Koundouri also expressed her pride in serving as a Fellow and Trustee of WAAS, and her great pleasure in engaging with her WAAS co-fellows Chantal Line Carpentier (UNCTAD), Amanda Ellis (ASU Global Futures Laboratory), Denis Naughten (Former Minister for Climate Action and Environment, Ireland), Josep Garí (UNDP), and Nikos Theodosiou. She emphasized her hope that their collective efforts will honor and advance the remarkable legacy of WAAS.

On 26 September 2025, the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) hosted, for the twelfth consecutive year, the “Researchers’ Night,” a European initiative aimed at bringing science closer to society.

The event featured representation from ReSEES, the Research Laboratory at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), and the AE4RIA network, both directed by Professor Dr. Phoebe Koundouri. Dr. Conrad Landis, Dr. Theodore Daglis, and Georgia Papageorgiou presented the work of ReSEES, which is dedicated to producing scientific knowledge and developing tools to support policies promoting economic prosperity, social cohesion, and environmental protection. AE4RIA, a network of excellence, connects universities, research centers, international organizations, and businesses to advance the green transition.

During the event, several flagship projects were highlighted, including ERC Water-Futures, Horizon Europe DiverSea, and Pathways2Resilience, as well as Horizon 2020 projects ARSINOE_EU, BRIDGE Black Sea, and Climate Impetus. These initiatives collectively aim to enhance climate resilience, foster innovation, and protect biodiversity. Particular attention was given to ARSINOE, which focuses on building resilient regions against climate change through innovative tools such as Virtual Reality (VR). Participants also engaged in a Discrete Choice Experiment, sharing their perspectives on the future development of Metropolitan Athens.

10 Years of the 2030 Agenda: Progress, Challenges, and Future Perspectives

The event, hosted by ASviS – Alleanza Italiana per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations, the UN Global Compact Network Italy, and SDSN Italy, took place live from Rome and New York during the United Nations General Assembly and Climate Week NYC.

In her intervention, Professor Phoebe Koundouri, Co-Chair of the forthcoming United Nations Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR) – the last before the 2030 deadline – reflected on both progress and setbacks:

The state of the SDGs: Current reports from the United Nations and the SDSN Global Climate Hub confirm that only 17–18% of the Sustainable Development Goals are on track. Vital systems – food, water, land, and oceans – remain in deep crisis. While Europe has advanced frameworks such as the European Green Deal, global and national implementation efforts are still lagging behind.

The way forward: The SDGs must remain the global framework for action, with light revisions to reflect the impacts of artificial intelligence, shifting geopolitics, and emerging realities. Solutions are not lacking: policy frameworks, financing instruments, and technological innovations are already available. What is missing is a dedicated global mechanism to coordinate science, technology, finance, and capacity building – and to translate knowledge into large-scale action.

On 22 September 2025, the AE4RIA team participated in the high-level side event Education for Peace & Planet: From Histories to Futures, held during the 80th United Nations General Assembly and NYC Climate Week.

Organized by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), the Centre for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, Mission 4.7, SDGs Today, and the Global Schools Program, the event convened educators, students, policymakers, and international partners to emphasize the transformative role of the Ages of Globalization (AoG) initiative. Inspired by Professor Jeffrey Sachs’ influential book, AoG is a free, interdisciplinary, and interactive learning program that has already engaged more than 13,000 learners and educators across 165 countries. By exploring seven ages of human history, the program enables participants to deepen their understanding of global interdependence and to design solutions for contemporary challenges.

Professor Dr. Phoebe Koundouri delivered the opening remarks, underscoring the global impact of the AoG program and the contribution of the EU-funded ARSINOE Project in co-developing lessons and climate resilience case studies that position education as a catalyst for sustainability action. She emphasized that history can serve as a powerful guide in the search for innovative solutions to today’s crises, from climate change to inequality.

Dr. Dimitris Raptis (SDSN Greece) contributed to Panel I: Learning Across Ages, highlighting the importance of integrated and participatory learning that bridges science, policy, and society. He pointed to the capacity of Generation Z as adaptive system-thinkers and showcased initiatives such as AoG and the SDSN Global Climate Hub as leading examples of transformative education for global citizenship.

Through their contributions, the AE4RIA team demonstrated how education can evolve beyond passive learning toward active, action-oriented approaches that prepare future generations to become engaged and responsible global citizens

PVBLIC Foundation’s Partnerships Day, held on 22 September at the United Nations Headquarters SDG Media Zone during the 80th UN General Assembly and Climate Week, featured a session titled “Rewiring Education: Building a New Operating System for Global Learning.” The discussion was moderated by Amanda Slavin and included distinguished contributions from Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Dr. Alison Bryant, and Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah.

In her speech, Professor Phoebe Koundouri highlighted the new partnership between the PVBLIC Foundation and a Cambridge University–based initiative dedicated to transformational interdisciplinary research focused on Prosperity, Social Inclusion, and Environmental Sustainability.

Professor Koundouri also addressed the future of education and skills, emphasizing the profound impact of artificial intelligence on skills development. She underscored the importance of innovative approaches that foster adaptability, inclusion, and resilience in education systems. During her presentation, she introduced the AE4RIA – Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aephoria AI Tools, which are designed to bridge policy, education, and sustainability:

• AE4RIA SDG Tracker – Enables users to upload any English-language PDF and instantly view its alignment with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals

• AE4RIA AI Skills Tool – Allows users to upload English HTML documents and identify relevant skills, occupations, courses, and SDGs, effectively transforming policy texts into actionable workforce insights

The event concluded with a VIP Reception co-hosted with the World Food Programme, which showcased innovative partnerships that leverage private sector capital, data, and technology to strengthen resilient food systems worldwide.

On 18 September, at the SDSN Chairs Meeting in New York—bringing together a global network of more than 2,000 institutions across 59 national and regional nodes, united in advancing the SDGs—Prof. Phoebe Koundouri, in her capacity as Co-Chair of SDSN Europe and Chair of the SDSN Global Climate Hub, presented the collective work of the networks at the science–policy interface. Her presentation focused on how to accelerate transformations toward sustainability.

Key points included:

• Global collaborations of the SDSN Global Climate Hub, including with the UNFCCC Global Climate Innovation Hub, advancing integrated pathways for climate neutrality and resilience and informing NDCs.

• Innovative projects spanning climate neutrality, the Water–Food–Energy–Biodiversity Nexus, Oceans & Seas, and Sustainable Socio-Economics & Finance.

SDSN Greece was also represented by Dr. Ebun Akinsete (Co-Chair) and Dr. Dimitris Raptis (Co-Manager), who presented national initiatives such as the SDG Measurement in Greece, alongside projects and activities highlighting youth engagement, outreach, and fundraising.

Prof. Phoebe Koundouri participated in the High-Level Conference on Reform of the UN Charter, held in New York under the auspices of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and led by Prof. Jeffrey Sachs.

The full-day conference fostered dialogue on how to modernize the UN system to address today’s pressing global challenges. With the UN Charter last amended in 1973, and in the aftermath of the 2024 Summit of the Future and its Pact for the Future, discussions underscored the urgent need for ambitious reform.

The agenda featured three thematic panels with distinguished leaders and experts:

• Sustainable Financing of Global Public Goods

• Should We Invoke Article 109?

These discussions are closely aligned with the mission of the SDSN Global Climate Hub and AE4RIA – Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aephoria, which Prof. Phoebe Koundouri chairs. They highlight that effective, inclusive, and adequately financed global governance is essential to advancing climate neutrality and delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Between 10 and 12 September 2025, the Forum on Vocational Excellence 2025 was held in Kolding, Denmark, bringing together leading Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs), educators, researchers, and professionals to exchange insights on skills development, innovation, and collaboration in vocational education.

Representing the CATALYST Project Erasmus+, Ms. Eleni Toli and Ms. Lydia Papadaki from the Athens University of Economics and Business, under the leadership of Professor Dr. Phoebe Koundouri (PI), actively contributed to the event.

The CATALYST team hosted the workshop “Sustainable Transformation & Future Competences”, an interactive session designed to explore how the CATALYST platform and programmes can support CoVEs in addressing emerging skill needs.

The workshop included:

• Interactive Mentimeter polls to map participants’ organisational backgrounds and identify urgent skill gaps,

• A hands-on session using the catalystplatform.eu, where participants explored available courses and services,

• A group exercise in which participants co-designed upskilling programmes, pilot projects, and collaboration ideas with the support of the CATALYST team,

• A dynamic closing session with key takeaways, collaboration commitments, and feedback on CATALYST’s access models.

Participants left the session with concrete ideas for future partnerships and tailored learning pathways, in line with the CATALYST mission to foster future-fit competences through co-creation, specialisation, and business innovation.

The Forum also featured high-level presentations and thematic exchanges on mobility, digital transformation, sustainable industries, inclusive education, and the evolving role of CoVEs in shaping Europe’s skills ecosystem.

Prof. Phoebe Koundouri participated in the International Workshop in Memory of Efthymios (Mike) Tsionas, held on 11–12 September 2025 at the Athens University of Economics & Business (AUEB), generously supported by the Bank of Greece.

The workshop brought together colleagues and friends from around the world to recognize Mike’s contributions to econometrics and applied economics. Beyond the research presented, it served as a tribute to a distinguished scholar, a supportive colleague, and a friend whose legacy continues to influence contemporary work.

On Thursday, 11 September, Prof. Koundouri presented (online) the paper:

“A Simulation-Driven Assessment of 35 European National Energy and Climate Plans”,

co-authored with A. Alamanos, I. Arampatzidis, S. Devves, T. Pliakou, and C. Deranian.

This work is an outcome of the UN SDSN Global Climate Hub , chaired by Prof. Koundouri. It employs an integrated systems modeling approach to simulate the performance of EU Member States’ National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs). By linking the dynamics of energy, economy, and environment, the research evaluates whether these plans are sufficient to achieve Europe’s climate neutrality commitment by 2050.

The findings indicate that while the NECPs represent an important collective effort, significant gaps remain between ambition and implementation capacity. Some countries are progressing well, while others risk falling short without stronger measures in renewable energy expansion, energy efficiency, and ensuring a just transition for workers and communities. The research provides policy-relevant insights to guide national governments and EU institutions in aligning current efforts with the long-term climate neutrality goal.

The program included presentations on frontier econometrics, Bayesian methods, climate policy, democracy, labor markets, and financial economics. Distinguished contributions included:

The workshop concluded with the keynote: “Mike Tsionas’ Contributions in Econometrics” by Prof. Subal Kumbhakar (Binghamton University, US), highlighting Mike’s intellectual depth, generosity, and lasting impact on the field.

Prof. Koundouri participated in the workshop with appreciation for the exchange of ideas, the generosity of the academic community, and the opportunity to honor Mike’s memory through rigorous scholarship and meaningful dialogue.

In the context of accelerating climate action and promoting sustainable development, the UN SDSN Global Climate Hub, supported by AE4RIA – Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria, in collaboration with the UNFCCC Climate Innovation Hub, continues its efforts to implement Climate Neutrality and Resilience Pathways. As part of this ongoing initiative, the OMVS Systemic Innovation Workshop was convened on 4–5 September 2025 at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in Athens. The workshop brought together high-level leaders, researchers, innovators, and a delegation of 20 officials from the Senegal River Basin Development Authority (OMVS), representing Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal.

The workshop marked the launch of a focused collaboration aimed at systemic transformation of the transboundary Senegal River Basin. It provided a platform for initiating the Systemic Innovation Cycle, co-designing digital solutions, and fostering an integrated approach to climate adaptation, water management, and sustainable regional development.

• Initiate the Systemic Innovation Cycle for the Senegal River Basin

• Launch the Ecosystem Clinical Trial of the Senegal River Basin Digital Twin and Community Dashboard

The OMVS Systemic Innovation Workshop represents a significant step forward in fostering systemic innovation and resilience across the Senegal River Basin. Through collaboration among regional authorities, international partners, researchers, and innovators, the initiative lays the foundation for data-driven, sustainable, and integrated climate solutions.

This leading regional initiative convenes policymakers, thought leaders, and innovators committed to accelerating the transition of cities toward carbon neutrality.

Representing AE4RIA, Dr. Ioannis Arampatzidis and Dr. Anni Triantafyllidou contributed their expertise to two high-level panel discussions, playing a significant role in advancing the dialogue on sustainable urban transformation and the broader green transition.

On 24/07/2025, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri contributed to the Closing Plenary Session of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS) @65 Conference. The session reflected on the key lessons emerging from this milestone gathering and considered the Academy’s future role in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.

In her remarks, Prof. Koundouri emphasized that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer a science‑based, integrated roadmap to address today’s “multicrisis”—the interconnected climate, ecological, social, and economic crises. While 190 countries have adopted SDG strategies, no goal is currently on track globally. She highlighted the contrast between progress in East and South Asia and the persistent fiscal constraints in low‑income countries. These challenges, she noted, require urgent reform of the Global Financial Architecture to unlock and redirect the world’s $30 trillion in savings toward emerging and developing economies (EMDEs).

On 23/07/2025 Prof. Phoebe Koundouri  was honored to speak at an interdisciplinary session examining war and peace through the lenses of sustainability, diplomacy, ecosystems, and governance. The panel, titled "War and Peace – Issues of Thought and Analysis," was moderated by Dr. Luci Attala, Anthropologist and Deputy Executive Director of the UNESCO-MOST BRIDGES Coalition, and Prof. Fadwa El Guindi, Ph.D., UCLA and Trustee of WAAS.

In her intervention, Prof. Koundouri emphasized the urgent need for systems transformation to ensure a sustainable and balanced interaction between society and nature. She underscored the complex, interlinked crises—geopolitical conflict, economic instability, inequality, climate change, and biodiversity loss—that collectively endanger global sustainability.

On the third day (23/07/2025) of the World Academy of Art and Science WAAS@65 Conference, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri moderated a high-level session titled "Strategies to Address Job Security and Economic Inequality."

In her opening remarks, Prof. Koundouri emphasized that growing job insecurity, widening economic inequality, and AI-driven technological disruptions pose serious threats to human security and social cohesion. She stressed the urgent need for comprehensive policy reform, inclusive and equitable technological transitions, and the development of sustainable labour markets aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. The first day of the WAAS@65 Conference  (21/07/2025)  began with a compelling, solution-oriented panel discussion titled "Global Solutions to Raise the World’s Platform – The UN SDGs," moderated by Prof. Phoebe Koundouri.

The panel explored the critical importance of accelerating progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a means of addressing rising global insecurity. In her opening remarks, Prof. Koundouri emphasized the urgency of collective action, citing data from the 2025 Sustainable Development Report, which reveals that only 17% of SDG targets are currently on track.

On 28/07/2025, the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences hosted a gathering convened by Professor Jeffrey Sachs under the Fraternal Economy Program. The meeting brought together diverse voices from across the world to reflect on the urgent need for a renewed, ethical multilateralism.

At a moment marked by global division and escalating crises, participants reaffirmed the shared responsibility of nations, faith communities, and civil society to advance peace, justice, and sustainability—anchored in solidarity and the common good.

As Head of the Sustainable Development Unit at the Athena Research Center, Professor Phoebe Koundouri had the honor of participating in the visit of His Excellency Laurence Auer, Ambassador of the French Republic to Greece, at the Athena Research Center.

Professor Koundouri presented the work of the Sustainable Development Unit, which undertakes advanced interdisciplinary research to support the transition towards sustainability. The Unit focuses on systems-based research and delivers innovative solutions aimed at fostering a green, digital, employment-rich, and equitable future. This work is conducted in collaboration with the AE4RIA (Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aephoria) network, which promotes sustainable development through the integration of science and policy.

At the FFD4 conference in Seville, held on 1 June 2025, the SDSN Global Climate Hub launched two significant reports presenting science-based, systems-modelled pathways to achieving net-zero emissions across 35 countries in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the Balkans.

The reports were introduced during the high-level session titled “Evidence-based Financial Pathways for Decarbonisation and Climate Neutrality”, co-organized by the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aephoria (AE4RIA), the SDSN Global Climate Hub, and the PVBLIC Foundation. The session convened global leaders from the fields of science, diplomacy, finance, and policy to discuss financial innovation, data-driven decision-making, governance, and regional adaptation strategies—aligned with the Compromiso de Sevilla and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) financing agenda.

On June 24th, 2025, AE4RIA participated in the 13th Systemic Innovation Workshop (SIW), organized by the United Nations Climate Change Global Innovation Hub (UGIH) during the Bonn Climate Change Conference. This high-level event convened global experts, policymakers, city and county leaders, researchers, financial institutions, and solution providers to co-design transformative, climate-resilient futures for both urban and rural communities.

Publicly funded research, such as through EPSRC and Horizon Europe, is increasingly assessed not only by scientific merit but by its impact in the real world, including commercial viability and socio-economic benefit. Yet many high-potential innovations in climate repair and biodiversity conservation stall before reaching implementation.By examining the mature, structured translation ecosystem in MedTech (e.g. LIHE at King's College London), this seminar explores how environmental and AI-driven science can be accelerated ethically and effectively into real-world impact. We focus particularly on the Triple Chasm Model, a commercialisation framework used in research institutions and Universities (including LIHE, UK Industrial Strategy, Babraham Institute and EIT Food) to guide research translation across multiple vectors, offering a clear bridge between research portfolios and viable spin-out ventures.We also examine the ethical imperative of giving scientists greater agency in how their work is deployed, using tools from Hegelian dialectic and Socratic inquiry to critically frame solution design and avoid unintended consequences.

Professor Phoebe Koundouri, Director of ReSEES Laboratory, took part in the prestigious Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum – 21st Global Annual Meeting in Kyoto, Japan

This year, world leaders convened at the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, just weeks ahead of the pivotal COP29 climate summit in November. A landmark “Pact for the Future” was adopted, addressing critical global issues through the Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations.

On 19th of September 2024, Ms. Lydia Papadaki (Researcher, AUEB; ATHENA RC) presented the results of a paper with the title: Catalysing Business Transformation: Leading Sustainable Development via Research Collaboration and Course Development" that was developed under the CATALYSTErasmus+ project at the 12th Annual International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD) at the No. 6A session entitled “Mission-oriented research to accelerate SDG solutions”.

Between 10th and 12th of September 2023, the Forum on Vocational Excellence 2024 took place in Lyon, France. Ms Eleni Toli, Ms Panagiota Koltsida and Ms Lydia Papadaki, (Athens University of Economics and Business) participated in the Forum representing the CATALYST Erasmus+ project.

The 2nd Stakeholders Workshop for the Attica Region in the framework of the Climate Impetus project took part online.
It was a successful, highly participatory workshop with a variety of stakeholders contributing to a series of live structured questions focusing on water scarcity matters of the region, while at the same time commenting on the various answers and results of interactive exercises.

On Tuesday July 2, took place the WCEREA Policy Session on "Climate Change, Land-Use, and Biodiversity: Economic Perspectives" at EAERE2024-29th Annual Conference (Leuven, Belgium)- organized by the World Council of Environmental and Resource Economists Association (of which Professor Phoebe Kountouri is the chairperson), in collaboration with the other world associations of environmental and resource economists - Asian Association of Environmental and Resource Economics (AAERE), AERE, AFAERE, LAERE, AARES). Τhe session provided a global view on what makes climate, biodiversity and land use policy most effective, for as many as possible, and for as long as possible.

Last week, on Wednesday, 26th June 2024, AE4RIA team participated in the EU Climate Pact event, “Green Skills for a Sustainable and Environmentally-Conscious Economy and Society”. This online event was organized by INZEB, the Country Coordinator for Greece for the EU Climate Pact, in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Unit – ATHENA RC (EU Climate Pact member), RESEES Research Laboratory – AUEB, and AE4RIA. The event highlighted the importance of green skills in promoting sustainable and environmentally conscious economies and societies.

On Wednesday, June 12, took place the “Networking Event of Initiatives and Projects for Adaptation to Climate Change,” in the framework of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project, organized by the Green Fund in collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy and the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency Greece (NECCA – ΟΦΥΠΕΚΑ). The event aimed to strengthen networking and cooperation between ongoing projects and initiatives for Greece’s adaptation to climate change.

The conference titled “Net-Zero and Climate-Resilient Shipping: Can Greece Lead the Race?” held on May 31, 2024, within the framework of the Posidonia Exhibition in Greece, at the Goulandris Natural History Museum, with the primary goal of discussing the future of the maritime industry, specifically emphasizing sustainability and climate resilience. Organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy of Greece, in collaboration the Goulandris Natural History Museum, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network Global Climate Hub and the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aeiphoria (AE4RIA) the event brought together a diverse array of stakeholders ranging from industry leaders to policymakers, researchers, and representatives from various organizations.

On Friday, April 26, 2024, between 12 and 15 p.m. EEST, a Greece Multiplier Event with the title “Transition to Circular Societies: The Role of Education” was organized by Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) and held at the Troias Amphitheatre, AUEB, in Athens, Greece. The event was organized under the Erasmus+ TICHE Academy and aimed at raising awareness regarding the shift towards circular societies, which signifies a pivotal shift in our pursuit of sustainable development as it entails the efficient utilization of resources, the reduction of waste, and the mitigation of environmental impact.

On April 22nd, in Bilbao, the MAIA EU project took a significant stride forward as partners convened for the second Strategy Meeting. This gathering served as a platform to reflect upon the achievements and milestones of the first 18 months of the MAIA journey.

On Monday 4^thof March 2024, Athens University of Economics and Business, CreativeThinking Development, and SporosCircularSolutions, organized a CATALYST Meeting with the title: “Greece National Centre of Vocational Excellence: A central hub and catalyst for Greece's sustainable business transformation”, that was held in EYDAP premises. EYDAP, a CATALYST associate partner, isthe largest company in Greece in the water supply, sewerage and wastewater treatment sector, covering the needs of more than 40% of the country's population, supplying Attica with drinking water, the quality of which is among the best in Europe. The goal of this meeting was to present the progress of the CATALYST project and discuss the next steps, synergiesand sustainability of the project.

On Wednesday 13^th of December 2023, Creative Thinking Development, Athens University of Economics and Business and Sporos Circular Solutions, organized a CATALYST a National Event with the title: “National Centre of Vocational Excellence: A central hub and catalyst for sustainable business transformation in Greece”, that was held in Airotel Alexandros, Athens, Greece.

From the 11th until the 13th of September 2023, a workshop of the ERASMUS+ CATALYST project took place in the premises of BEST in Vienna, Austria. AUEB was represented by Ms Lydia Papadaki (Researcher, PhDc at AUEB) and Ms Eleni Toli (Senior researcher at AUEB).

From March 7 – 9, 2023, the 6th International Conference on Education for Human Security took place online. The conference examined the relevance and applicability of the human security approach to different fields of higher education. It sought to generate awareness and initiate active discussion among educators and universities on the central importance of the Human Security Approach as an integral component of higher education.

On Wednesday February 8^th, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri gave a speech at the conference “Perspectives on Just Transition” which took place at Sciences Po Paris (Amphitheater Chapsal) and it was organized by the European Chair for Sustainable Development and Climate Transition.

On the 2nd and 3rd of February took place the “Fraternal Economy of Integral and Sustainable Development” workshop at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. 

On the 31^st of January, Prof. Koundouri gave a speech about the (ERC) Water Futures project and its potential contribution to support European policies on water scarcity and adopt a nexus approach in the discussion with the topic: Water Scarcity and the nexus in European policy which was introduced by Dagmar Kaljarikova Behrendt (European Commission, DG ENV) and moderated by Prof. Chrysi Laspidou at the Webinar: ‘Nexus research for improved policy support: water scarcity in Europe’.

The First Dolomite Conference on the Global Governance of Climate Change: On the road to Sharm El-Sheikh

From the 20th – 22nd October in a three-day meeting thirty visionary intellectuals, policy makers, entrepreneurs, managers, journalists, political and natural scientists met to discuss the matter of climate change and find innovative solutions. The whole conference has been articulated by problems to be solved into working groups and plenary discussions, whose conclusions were then reported by the chairs and introducers of various sessions.

From 10 – 14 October members of European Junior Water Programme (EJWP) Groups 3 and 4 combined expertise and learning paths in a Training Week hosted by the University of Thessaly, in Athens.

Under the umbrella of the H2020 funded BRIDGE-BS, the Blue Economy High-Tech for the Black Sea is a large research-based Black Sea forum on ocean digitalization and Industry 4.0 across academia, research organizations, investors, industry, and society at large.

On the 19th and 20th of September 2022, the Kick-off meeting of the ERASMUS+ CATALYST project took place in Skopje, North Macedonia. 

On 26th September prof. Phoebe Koundouri gave a keynote speech focused on “European Sustainability Transition: Policy and Vision” at the 20th annual Corporate Responsibility Conference, Headwinds 

On the occasion of the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations, Prof. Koundouri gave five different speeches in New York. These speeches were focused on the presentation of the SDSN Global Climate Hub that she chairs, as well as the SDSN and AE4RIA research on the acceleration of SDGs Implementation.

The hybrid Greece-Japan Sustainable Island Symposium is co-organised by the  Research Laboratory on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability (ReSEES) at Athens University of Economics and Business, the Institute for Future Initiatives (IFI) at the University of Tokyo and the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria (AE4RIA). It will take place from 28^th to 29^th of September at the Electra Palace in Athens, Greece followed by a hybrid Climathon on Sustainable islands which will run from 28^th to 30^th of September inviting everyone to suggest solutions on “Sustainability and ageing population”.

On June 1^st, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri, SDSN Europe Co-Chair and Maria Cortes Puch, SDSN Vice President of Network Program, presented SDSN framework of SDGs transformation pathways to the United Nations ECA (Europe and Central Asia) Regional Economist Network Annual Retreat.

On Thursday 2 June 2022, at 17:00-18:30 (EEST)/ 16:00-17:30 (CEST), the Greek and European Economy Observatory of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) is organizing an online discussion, on the occasion of the publication of Alessio Terzi’s book on: “Growth for Good: Reshaping capitalism to save humanity from climate catastrophe” (Harvard University Press).

Greek sustainability leaders, selected by Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium: Prof. Phoebe Koundouri had the honor of being selected by Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium, as one of the 7  Greek sustainability leaders.

On May 3rd the SDSN’s Senior Working Group on European Green Deal  will launch the 2ndAnnual Report, entitled “Financing the Transformations for the Joint Implementation of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the European Green Deal” 

The official launch of the Goulandris Natural History Museum exhibition on climate change took place on Friday 16 April. This is the first interactive exhibition on Climate Change in Greece and is entitled “Climate Change and Us”.

On the 31st of March & 1st of April the second meeting of the European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant “Water Futures” took place at at ATHENA Research and Innovation Center.

On 17th March Prof. Phoebe Koundouri participated as a Keynote Speaker at the conference “New Trends in Football: CSR and Sustainable Development” organized by BOUSSIAS and supported by SDSN Europe & SDSN Greece. The conference presented the New Trends in modern football in the light of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development.

he EUROPAEUM 2022 Winter School on Planetary Wellbeing taking place on 22-25 February 2022 in Barcelona, at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). This Winter School is a joint endeavour of the EUROPAEUM and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra to increase knowledge and understanding of the set of complex, interrelated and systemic issues affecting the wellbeing of humans, animals and the planet itself.

The Green Transition is all around us. The Circular Economy is a resilient system that regenerates the environment, creates new jobs and ultimately decouples economic growth from the depletion of finite resources, tackling climate change and biodiversity loss, while fostering SMEs growth and innovation. Key stakeholders are exploring how to accelerate the Circular Transition and enable climate resilience in the most efficient way, addressing major policy developments, spreading business best practices and empowering climate-financing tools and impact investment strategies, with a special focus on Greece & Southeast Europe

On the occasion of the 2022 UN-ECOSOC Partnership Forum, to be held on 2 February 2022, SDSN Europe and SDSN Greece co-organize a side event: Joint implementation of the Agenda 2030 and the European Green Deal: Transformations for a sustainable recovery from COVID-19.

On the 13^th of December Prof. Koundouri participated at the Panel Discussion “Resilience to Climate Change, Natural Hazards and Pandemic Risks - Biosafety”, within the framework of the 2nd International Conference TMM_CH.

On the 10th of December Prof. Koundouri gave a speech at the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment - 16 Days of Activism event.

On 8/12/21 Prof. Koundouri gave a speech at the “COP26 Conference - How do we move forward in Europe?”, an expert discussion about the results of the COP26 Conference, organized by KAS Greece and Cyprus.

Prof. Koundouri as President Elect of the European Association of Environmental and Natural Resource Economists participated at the second session of the conference.

Prof. Phoebe Koundouri with her role as co-chair of SDSN Europe provided the wrap-up at the Closing Remarks session together with Mr Dimitris Dimitriadis, President of the Section for External Relations (REX), European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).

On 2/12/21 Prof. Koundouri gave a welcoming speech at the webinar “Circular Economy Approach in Albania: sharing of experiences" which was organized by Open Society Foundation for Albania(OSFA) and QARKON: Platform for Diaspora Knowledge Gain (QARKON).

The Greek-Nigerian Chamber of Commerce and Technology (GNCCT) in partnership with the Embassy of Nigeria in Athens hosted the 2021 GNCCT Investment Summit that took place on Tuesday, 30th November 2021, in Athens Greece.

The 2nd Annual EPICUR FORUM, hosted this year by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, took place virtually, on the 24 – 26 November 2021.

On 12/10/21 Prof. Koundouri gave a speech on “Green Transition as a driver to foster innovation cohesion” during the discussion with Commissioner Gabriel at the online event “Fostering  Innovation Cohesion” by the K4I Forum in the European Parliament.

On 11/10/21 Prof. Koundouri gave a keynote speech on “What is the Future We Want? The Green Deal as tool to achieve the SDG agenda” at the SDG Generation Festival. She also participated in the Panel Discussion “The role of education in the realisation of the European Green Deal” together with María Cortés Puch, María García Alvarez and Sandra Pellegrom.

Prof. Koundouri participated in the Session III: Building Forward Better, (re-)distribution and the implementation of inclusive socio-ecological transitions: The role of social protection which took place on the 14^th of September 2021.

On 2/9/21 Prof. Koundouri participated in a round table discussion focused on “Adaptation to climate change, a driving force for the societies to transit to a greener future”, together with Prof Costas Synolakis , Mr. C. Economou and Prof Maria Papadopoulou.

On the 23^rd of July Prof. Koundouri gave a speech at the launch of  #HeatSeason in Europe organized by the Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center.

This thematic session is dedicated to the “EAERE Award for ERC Grants laureates in the field of environmental and resource economics”. This award intends to recognize the scientific excellence of ERC grantees (Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants, Advanced Grants, Synergy Grants) in the field of environmental and resource economics.

This thematic session is dedicated to the EAERE Award for Best Doctoral Dissertations in Environmental and Resource Economics. This award is given to encourage and recognize outstanding and innovative academic achievement in the field of Environmental and Resource Economics. Three dissertations are awarded every year after peer review of all submissions.

On 9/6/21 Prof. Koundouri gave a speech at the Webinar: Green transition and the economy organized by Turin School of Regulation.

PANEL II – YOUTH PARTICIPATION FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE

After the success of the first Athens Circular Forum in bringing the Circular Agenda at the heart of the public debate, this year the Athens Circular Forum II took place on May 31 and June 1, as the Partner Event for Greece in the #EUGreenWeek, under the auspices of the EU Commission and the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy.

On 17/11 Prof. Koundouri participated in the discussion on Science and Social Consensus in the Mediterranean at CASSANDRA 2021 Conference organized by Eurecat.

We are pleased to share with you the upcoming workshop of the Nexus Project Cluster, which is going to be held on Tuesday November 23. The title of the Workshop is 'Advancing the Nexus for Science and Policy'. During the workshop Several new projects funded from H2020 and PRIMA will present themselves and there will be a more forward-looking approach to identify emerging topics for research and policy. The workshop will of course also focus on how the cluster could support science and policy in the next years.

The transition to net zero emissions by 2050 could hinder environmental and biodiversity conservation. EAERE promotes the research-policy interface by examining this issue from an energy, marine and land-use standpoint. This provides the science-based framework to analyse the key role that renewable assets, reporting standards and sustainable finance can play to drive a sustainable transition.

On Monday, 20/9, Prof. Koundouri joined the discussion on “Towards COP26: Climate Crisis Response Actions” at the XXI High-Level Meeting - New York, USA as a side event to the United Nations General Assembly titled: “What does peace and stability mean in 21st century”, organized by the Nizami Ganjavi International Center.

On the 23rd of June Prof. Koundouri as president-elect of EAERE, chaired the Policy Session “Transformative investment for an inclusive, green and digital recovery from COVID 19 pandemic: Lancet COVID19 commission and UN SDSN European Green Deal Report” at the 26th Annual Conference of the EAERE which was held from June 23 - June 26, 2021

Professor Koundouri as co-chair of SDSN Greece & Europe and Director of EIT Climate-KIC Hub Greece co-organised & participated in 5 sessions.

On 21/4 Prof Koundouri presented the activities of SDSN EU and EAERE at the Ninth IAERE Annual Conference where she opened the lecture of Prof William Nordhaus, Nobel Prize in Economics 2018, on “Bridging the Gap Between Policy and Aspirations on Climate Policy”, together with Prof. Sergio Vergalli.
