Prof. Phoebe Koundouri’s Interview on ERT3

During her recent interview with ERT3, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri discussed pressing issues in Greece, focusing on Climate Change and its impact on extreme weather events. Climate instability translates to a rising occurrence of extreme weather phenomena. These climate change-related challenges encompass more frequent and intense heatwaves, wildfires, flooding, and rising sea levels.

“Based on our analysis in the annual SDSN Sustainability reports, Greece ranks 28th out of 166 countries Globally, but only 27th out of 38 European Countries in relation to its progress towards the implementation of the SDGs, facing major and significant challenges for the majority of the goals.  Specifically, in our SDSN report for the progress on Greek Regions we had underlined that most of the 13th Greek administrative distinct face major challenges in the implementation of Goal 9, that is resilient infrastructures.
Intuitively, even regions that have a high level of implementation in relation to mitigation (SDG13) are hot spots to extend wildfires or flooding due to lacking in adaptation measures and climate change resilient infrastructures.

It’s important to emphasize that we possess the necessary technological advancements and economic resources to make prudent investments in mitigating these issues. By combining technological innovation with political and financial solutions, we can chart a course toward a sustainable future, characterized by a robust economy and a resilient natural environment, all by the year 2030.”
