18-09-2025On 17/09/2025, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri appeared on Mega TV News (National Greek Channel) to discuss the ever-increasing costs of climate change and their profound impact on every aspect of our lives.
As Chair of the SDSN Global Climate Hub, Prof. Koundouri highlighted the Hub’s analysis showing that the costs of inaction are enormous, both globally and in Europe, posing serious threats to economies, public health, and ecosystems.
The UN SDSN Global Climate Hub, in collaboration with the UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub, has developed detailed transition pathways for all countries in Europe and the Balkans, aimed at avoiding these costs and setting a course toward sustainable development and long-term growth.
These pathways demonstrate the technologies, policies, and fiscal and financial instruments that can accelerate climate mitigation and adaptation, while simultaneously fostering economic growth, labour market opportunities, and greater equality across Europe.

10-09-2025On 4 September, in an interview with journalist Nicolas Kaufmann from Surplus Magazin, Prof. Phoebe Koundouri shares insights on Athens’ ambitious goal to become climate-neutral by 2030.
Athens faces rising heat, pollution, and a heavy reliance on cars, which limits the efficiency of public transport. To tackle these challenges, the city needs more public transport, electric vehicles, pedestrian zones, and green spaces, including microforests, to reduce urban heat. Achieving climate neutrality requires strategic planning, targeted funding, and strong institutions.
The SDSN Global Climate Hub, supported by Ae4ria – Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Aephoria, is contributing to this effort by identifying systemic pathways for transport transformation—ensuring that change is not only technological, but also institutional and social.
Despite limited fiscal space, Athens can become a prototype of Southern European Green and Inclusive mobility by integrating sustainability principles, digital and green technologies, AI, and Machine Learning into transport developments. The proposed projects must be designed in the most integrated and human-centric way, while being de-risked and financed by both public and private capital. Athens needs to pave its sustainable pathway on science, technology, and integrated SDG-stimulus finance. According to Prof. Koundouri, this is absolutely achievable.

01-08-2025On 26 July 2025, in an interview with ERT News, Professor Phoebe Koundouri addressed the pressing issue of Greece’s recurring cycle of severe droughts followed by destructive floods. She explained how this pattern is exacerbated by the combined effects of climate change, degraded landscapes, and insufficient infrastructure.
Professor Koundouri emphasised that while effective scientific solutions are available—such as early warning systems and nature-based approaches—persistent political inaction hinders meaningful progress. With the European Union already initiating legal proceedings against Greece for delays in flood risk planning, she stressed the urgent need to move from reactive measures toward proactive, resilience-focused strategies.
These themes are explored in greater depth in her recent article for 360info, “Running dry, then underwater: Greece’s path to building resilience against climate threats”.
