26-06-2025The latest report from the SDSN Global Climate Hub, titled “Climate Neutrality Pathways for Greece: Integrated Assessment and Decision Support Tool (2025),” presents an integrated modelling approach to assess Greek National Commitments for Climate Neutrality, within a holistic framework that includes food-land, water, and cross-sectoral energy systems. This is achieved by combing different models (FABLE Calculator, BiofuelGCH tool, LEAP, Maritime GCH model, WaterReqGCH tool, LandReqCalcGCH tool) under a scenario of joint implementation of the most important sectoral policies driving the transition to climate-neutrality. In particular, different energy, agricultural, shipping, and water policy frameworks are simulated jointly in such a National-Commitment scenario, to provide useful insights on whether these plans can achieve the climate-neutrality goals and identify weaknesses that need to be addressed in order to capitalise on the opportunities for a broader sustainability transition.

A key barrier is systemic fragmentation, where siloed policies, competing priorities, and uncoordinated efforts hinder effective progress. This disjointed approach leads to inefficiencies, conflicting outcomes, and missed opportunities for synergy.
The cost of inaction is steep: the World Bank estimates $2.4 trillion annually is needed just to address global crises in developing nations, while the UN projects $5–7 trillion per year to meet the SDGs globally. Regulatory complexity further complicates international collaboration.

During the discussion, Prof. Koundouri emphasized that the circular economy is not only an environmental necessity but also a strategic economic priority. She highlighted its critical role in generating long-term value for countries, businesses, and citizens alike.
The interview also touched on Greece’s strong performance in sustainable strategic planning and underscored the pressing need for international collaboration—especially in the lead-up to the upcoming Sustainable Development Summit in Seville.
As Chair of the SDSN Global Climate Hub, Prof. Koundouri discussed how the Hub's work is instrumental in supporting the transition from planning to implementation. She explained how science-based tools and methodologies developed by the Hub are helping countries and stakeholders achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

22-05-2025A return to the traditional Mediterranean diet in Greece offers a powerful opportunity to address both environmental and public health challenges. Research using the FABLE Calculator shows that widespread dietary change could reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions by up to 60% by 2050, primarily through lower meat consumption and more efficient land use.
Despite the country’s heritage, modern dietary habits—especially among younger generations—have drifted from Mediterranean principles, contributing to rising chronic disease rates and environmental stress.
Adopting this diet not only supports climate goals but also promotes healthier lifestyles. Strategic policies, public awareness, and support for local food systems are essential to realizing these benefits and creating a more sustainable future for Greece.
