Public Transportation in Athens
Athens offers a convenient and affordable public transportation system that makes it easy for international students to move around the city. The network includes the metro, buses, trolleybuses, and the tram, all of which connect major neighborhoods, universities, cultural sites, and entertainment areas.
The Athens Metro is one of the fastest and most reliable ways to travel. It has three main lines that link the city center with the suburbs, the airport, and the port of Piraeus. Trains run frequently from early morning until midnight, with extended hours on weekends.
The Buses cover almost every area of Athens, including places that are not easily accessible by metro. Buses operate from early morning to late at night, and there are also a few night routes that run after midnight.
The Tramway connects the center with the southern coastal areas, offering a scenic ride along the Athenian Riviera. It is especially convenient for students living near the coast or those who enjoy spending time by the sea.
Express bus services, as well as the Metro, connect Athens with Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (AIA) located near the town of Spata, 35 km east of Athens.
Athens is also the hub of the country’s National Railway Network, connecting the capital with major cities across Greece and abroad, whereas ferries departing from the major port of Piraeus connect the city to the numerous Greek islands of the Aegean Sea.
For frequent users, the ATH.ENA Card, a rechargeable travel card, is the most practical option. Students can benefit from reduced fares, making daily commuting more economical.
Overall, public transportation in Athens is safe, budget-friendly, and efficient, helping international students explore the city with ease while adjusting to their new academic and social life.
