Residence Permit Application in Greece

Step 1: Obtain an AFM (Tax Identification Number)

Required documents typically include:

  • Valid passport or national ID
  • Proof of address (e.g., rental agreement or a declaration of residence) (If you are staying as a hosted person (guest) at an address, the rental agreement should clearly state that you are a hosted individual (guest).)
  • Completed M1 form (available online via the AADE website or at the Tax Office)
  • Non-Greek citizen, additional documents such as university registration may be required (https://e-grammateia.aueb.gr/). (It is the certificate through e-Grammateia («πιστοποιητικό σπουδών» in Greek language)

Step 2: Apply for the Residence Permit Online

The procedure for residence permit issuance is online. You must apply on the website  https://portal.immigration.gov.gr/electronic-applications/new/2406/verification1  and upload the needed documents see below all the required documents:

  1. Residence permit application fee (€150) (e-paravolo | ΑΑΔΕ)
  2. Certified copy of a valid passport or travel document
  3. National entry visa (A photocopy of the temporary visa you have issued)
  4. Private health insurance
    1. You may contact info@demst.gr to request a suitable insurance policy – for residence permit use -  (cost is generally low) (Private health insurance policy providing hospital coverage)
  5. Proof of sufficient financial resources (e.g., bank statements) (The IBAN of a bank account and a document showing the available balance, which should be at least €650.)
  6. Certificate of Studies (in Greek and English) via https://e-grammateia.aueb.gr/  

Step 3: Obtain an AMKA (Social Security Number) (if you wish to work in Greece)

  • Necessary for social insurance and work eligibility.
  • Issued at KEP (Citizen Service Center) or EFKA offices.

         Required documents:

  • Valid passport or ID
  • AFM
  • Proof of student status (e.g., enrollment certificate or student ID)
