AUEB meets Painting and Poetry
“A live artistic / poetic dialogue for the students of the AUEB Teacher Education Program ”
In the context of stimuli around fostering the education of the prospective teacher in connection with the "art and education" action, the students of the AUEB Teacher Education Program participated in a specially designed experiential workshop on " Museum and Education : Their Use in Teaching Practice” at the retrospective painting exhibition “POETICS ” by Yiannis Psychopedis at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) at Syggrou Avenue 364, Kallithea.
In particular, students’ visits to art venues continued on Wednesday 11/20/2019, when the students of the Program ,accompanied by the scientific director Dr. Vasiliki Brinia and the scientific collaborator of the Program and philologist Dr. Katerina Alexiadis visited the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) where the exhibition "POETICS" is hosted at the National Library. In the exhibition area, the students of the Program , working in groups, participated in an experiential workshop and had the opportunity to observe the portraits of the poets created by Jannis Psychopedis and consult their biographical details to focus on the features that the artist emphasizes in their depiction. Studying poems of specific authors in their groups at the same time, they were asked to interpret in their own way the connection between the poetry discourse and the paintings of Jannis Psychopedis referring to them and while based on the exhibits, they proposed as groups creative educational activities that they would adopt as teachers to introduce art into the practice of teaching their subject.
Jannis Psychopedis, being concerned about the constant flattening of images through commercialization, which abolishes the importance of painting as an art either directly or indirectly, sought by his works to impart to the discourse a free movement through which his painting would be interpreted differently by each visitor, thereby causing a permanent shift of perspective. So through his exhibition "POETICS", which is a production and initiative of SNFCC, the visitor is able, like another Odysseus, to travel from Homer to Elytis and from Empiricus to Lorca and by observing different painting techniques, such as oil paintings and painting engravings, to “reach his own Ithaca”, or else the approach of the work that expresses him/her. In essence, with his art, Psychopedis abolishes each standardized view of the image and gives a moment of life to its figures, filling the sense of absence often born to the viewer, bringing him/her closer to words that melt within images and images that melt within words.
The SNFCC visitors will have the opportunity to experience this special conversation between painting and poetry, until January 12, 2020, having the chance not only to interpret the painter's works, but also to “give birth to their own truth” through the image of the word and the word of the image based on the themes that the artist deals in his works.
