Course Description

Α brief historical review of the Theory of Industrial Organisation. Basic concepts and definitions. Relation to other fields of economic science. Horizontal and vertical limits to the size of the firms. Analysis of monopolies. Price discrimination. Tying and price discrimination. Oligopoly theory: Cournot and von Stackelberg models. Market concentration and market performance. Product differentiation. Oligopolistic competition under product differentiation. Entry of firms and barriers to entry. Tacit collusion. Market failures and micro-economic policy. Social welfare losses due to monopoly power. Basic principles of regulation and introduction to competition policy.
