The largest and most prominent international scientific Conference in the areas of maritime economics, shipping finance and management, ports and maritime logistics and other maritime related fields, was held in Athens from 25th to 28th June 2019, under the Auspices of H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos

It was the 27th Annual Conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME), organized by the Research Laboratory in International Shipping, Finance and Management (ISFM Lab) of Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), and the Master’s Program with the same name (MSc in ISFM).

The Conference Chairman was Professor Manolis G. Kavussanos, Director of the aforementioned Lab and Master’s Program.

More than 260 scientific papers were presented, authored by more than 560 scientists from 48 countries of the world.  

The Opening Ceremony took place on 26th June at the Onassis Cultural Centre, with keynote speeches delivered by high profile, international key players of the Maritime Industry:

  • Mr. Theodore E. Veniamis, Chairman of the Union of Greek Shipowners
  • Mr. Dimitrios Fafalios, President of INTERCARGO
  • Dr. Nikolas P. Tsakos, Chairman of INTERTANKO for the time-period 2014-2018

An intriguing discussion was moderated by Prof. Manolis G. Kavussanos, under the theme ‘Significant policy and regulatory issues of the International Maritime Industry’.

    A Plenary Session followed, focusing on shipping finance - an area in which Greek shipping companies and academics possess notable expertise.
    The title of the Session was ‘Shipping Finance in the 21st Century’ and hosted invited speeches from top executives of the international shipping market: 

    • Mr. Dimitris Anagnostopoulos, Member of the Board of Directors at Aegean Baltic Bank
    • Mr. Jerry Kalogiratos, CEO at Capital Product Partners L.P.
    • Mr. George Politis, CEO at Capital Securities

    The session was moderated by Professor Manolis G. Kavussanos.

    The academic program of the Conference included more than 260 scientific papers, authored by more than 530 authors from 48 countries of the world. A vast range of scientific areas  was covered, like for example energy resources in the maritime industry, international policies and regulations, shipping markets, investments and finance, management and strategy in shipping, logistics and supply chain, port economics, policy and management, maritime safety and security, human resources and other maritime related fields. Recent geopolitical and economic developments attracted great attention both from scientists and market executives, as happened also with other current issues faced by the international shipping industry, like the enforcement of IMO 2020 Sulfur Regulation, sustainable development of the industry and the interest of young seafarers in pursuing careers at sea.


    The prizes and awards presented were:

    1. the Best Conference Paper Award, sponsored by Maritime Economics and Logistics (MEL) – Palgrave Macmillan-Springer
    2. the Maritime Policy and Management (MPM) Best 2018 Published Paper Award, sponsored by Taylor & Francis
    3. the Young Researcher Best Paper Award, sponsored by the Kühne Logistics University (KLU)
    4. the best paper award for the Special Session ‘Financial Risk Management & Investments in Maritime Transportation’, sponsored by the MSc in International Shipping, Finance and Management of Athens University of Economics and Business
    5. the best paper award for the Special Session ‘Twenty first century shipping markets: From building to scrapping and beyond’, sponsored by the MSc in International Shipping, Finance and Management of Athens University of Economics and Business
    6. the best paper award for the Special Session ‘Port Competitiveness and Competition’, sponsored by the University of Rhode Island, Lincoln-Kennedy Research Fund
    7. the ‘Kyoto Prize’ awarded to one of the best IAME papers that had an important academic/practical significance
    8. the ‘Best Reviewer’ award.

    A range of cultural tours and networking events were held in Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, the Acropolis Museum, the historical ship-museum 'Hellas Liberty' and the Yacht Club of Greece.

    Under the generous sponsorship of Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, conference delegates and guests enjoyed an evening welcoming cocktail reception at its premises in Piraeus, together with a short tour and a welcoming speech by the representatives of the Foundation.


      

     
     
     


    On June 26th, after 20:00, when the Acropolis Museum closed for the public, it opened only for IAME delegates and guests, who had the privilege to enjoy a private guided tour in the Museum. This was followed by a cocktail reception on the Roof Restaurant and terrace, right beneath the Acropolis Hill and the Parthenon, enjoying panoramic views of classical and modern Athens.

     
     
     


    Conference delegates and guests enjoyed the Gala Dinner of the Conference at the Yacht Club of Greece in Mikrolimano, Piraeus. The site used to be the summer palace of the Greek Royal family.
    The conference sponsors were awarded commemorative plaquettes for their generous support to the Conference organisation.

    Under the generous sponsorship of the International Propeller Club of the United States, in the evening of June 28th, IAME2019 delegates and guests enjoyed a Private Guided Tour on the historical ship-museum "Hellas Liberty" and an on-board cocktail reception.
