Understanding history through photo collections in a digital age - the challenges of Holocaust Archives in the future

Περίληψη / Abstract

The digital age presents numerous challenges and opportunities in the world of visual documentation. On the one hand, IT enables creating  unique systems of documentation and search among vast collections while at the same time serious issues of authenticity are becoming a challenge in the age of generated images and digital falsification. The lecture will first present the concept of historical photo collections in contrast to other forms of photo collection with a specification on Holocaust related material. Thereafter it will represent various issues of digitalization, authentication and research of such material in a changing digital environment.
